Gus Hansen experienced a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only player to achieve closing table in three of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You may remember one of the largest pots in big stakes poker recorded history against Daniel Negreanu. Gus raked in a big pot with 4 of a kind against Negreanu’s full house. Hansen has made many tv poker appearances and is thought to be one of the best bettors anywhere in the world. While participating in web poker, another side of Hansen has appeared. Gus regularly participates in the 200/400 NL max buy-in of $40, 000. Gus frequently buys-in for the minimum of Sixteen Thousand dollars and plays very poorly. He sits there waiting for a decent hand and then pushes all in. I believe Hansen is an outstanding poker player but certainly not even close to the regular players at 200/400no limit. Unless Gus is penniless, he has little or no reason to sit at the game with the minimum buy in.
Buying in for the minimum takes a majority of the ability out of deep stack poker. Hansen is assumed to be one of the best players anywhere in the world but he cannot buy-in for the full amount. I believe television can skew our view of the real world sometimes. The best poker players anywhere in the world may be players you have won’t have heard about. Gus can be seen playing internet poker on Full Tilt. He usually competes in big stakes omaha high and texas holdem. Gus has shown himself as a competition player. Can he back up his abilities in money games?
