Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players often get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in just about every poker game.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

While it seems complex at the start, following a few rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of the game with ease.
